Hematology and Medical Oncology

We provide care for both non-cancerous blood disorders and blood cancers. Non-cancerous blood disorders might include anemia, hemophilia and blood-clotting disorders. Blood cancers might include leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

Hematology

Hematology focuses on diseases of the blood, especially cancers. Some of the tests we use include:

• Complete blood count (CBC) to help diagnose anemia and certain blood cancers and to monitor infection
• Platelet count to diagnose and monitor bleeding and clotting disorders
• Prothrombin time (PT) to evaluate bleeding and clotting disorders and monitor anti-clotting therapy
• Urinalysis to diagnose kidney and urinary tract infections

Oncology

Many cancers, including blood cancers, are treated with chemotherapy—medications that target cancer cells and prevent them from growing or dividing. Many of these drugs reach all parts of the body, not just the cancer cells. We work closely with Lancaster General Health surgeons and radiation oncologists to develop an individualized treatment plan.

Depending on the type of treatment you need, therapy may be administered in the new state-of-the-art Oncology Infusion Center located at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute. The setting is staffed by chemotherapy-certified nurses who deliver expert care in a warm and supportive environment.
